March 2, 2005 - Wednesday
I was told on Monday by a teacher that Jeremy had, uncharacteristically, stubbornly refused to clean up the blocks with which he had been playing. I wasn't hearing it straight from the teacher involved, but there was a indication of apparently great surprise since Jeremy hadn't really acted that way at school before. Yesterday I heard there were fewer problems, but they were back today and may have been there last week, too. Unfortunately, the way the schedule works, I don't have much opportunity actually speak directly with Jeremy's teachers. I did see one briefly yesterday morning and told her that stubbornness is certainly a trait Jeremy brings out from time to time.
Mealtimes continue to be very trying with Jeremy. Not all the time, but often and that makes me think that maybe he just likes to eat slowly. He's proven that when it's important to him that he can do it. Unfortunately, getting him to realize the importance is difficult even though he's missed having time to play after both breakfast and dinner several times. When I mentioned to his teacher that Jeremy could hold out drinking his last inch of milk for quite a while, she said she's seen him do that at school, but also they're not really in any position to force the issue. At school they just have a finite period of time for lunch and snack and if children aren't done, they won't have time to finish. I suppose our tactic of making him stay at the table until he does drink it gives him mixed messages, but I kind of doubt that has much to do with it. I think he's mostly just finding his place. I guess he's at least getting comfortable enough at school to feel the confident to flex some attitude there now, too.
