May 25, 2000 - Thurday
Today was a bit of a strange day. For some reason Harry's schedule was off, so his naps weren't either as frequent or when they should have been and he turned down all but the scantest portions of milk almost the whole day. Perhaps he has been on a binge the last few days, or perhaps the two meals per day of solid food is catching up with him, but I have to admit I get a little frustrated when he seems like he should eat and doesn't because it usually means trouble later. On the other hand, today Harry was remarkable serene most of the time. On several occasions when I needed to answer a phone call or tend to something, Harry just hung out occupying himself, allowing me a relatively great deal of freedom to attend to other matters. I even got some writing done while he was awake and spent almost the entire afternoon with him at the lab.

Of course, I did play with Harry, too. You can see him to the right playing with the Wiggly-Giggly ball. In the bottom picture, you can also witness a very strange ritual he now performs with the ball. Naturally, his first instinct is to try to eat it; however, sometimes instead of putting it to his mouth, he'll put it against his forehead. This makes no sense to me. It's not as if he's trying to eat it and missed because his mouth isn't struggling to reach it or chomping at air. He just holds it there against his head with his eyes blankly staring downward as if in some type of mind meld with the ball to capture to either essence of sport or the true nature of the giggling noise the ball makes. Mostly likely, I suppose, it helps him balance the ball so it won't fall, but whatever it is it's a surprisingly passive moment in an otherwise all action all the time baby's life.
