December 3, 2002 - Tuesday
December's new Theme for the Month at Harry's preschool is "Our Solar
System" and when I found that out I just had to offer to bring in Harry's
Solar System blanket for show, touch, and tell. The blanket was such a
good introduction to the solar system for Harry that he can already name many
of the planets. Perhaps more importantly, Harry's so proud of it and I sure
like the idea of Harry feeling like the star of the day. From either perspective,
it seemed like an opportunity not to be missed.
When I left it there this morning, open, there were just three kids at school
that early, but they were pretty excited about it and I had to fight off worries
about bunch of three-year-olds running back and forth across this special
blanket with shoes. Thankfully, it seems the teacher had the kids take off
their shoes and, just as I would have hoped, do things like stepping from
one planet to another, and playing memory games, like "go to Jupiter."
I know less about how Harry felt about the whole thing and whether he was,
indeed, a big shot for the day. When I picked him up from school I told him
a couple of times that he was the hero for the day at school, but he kept
denying it. I'm pretty sure he had no idea what hero meant, but he was generally
less enthusiastic than I might have expected.
