February 26, 2004 - Thursday
At bedtime this evening, Harry told his mother he did not want any stories.
So, she turned off the light and left him alone. Once I finished reading to
Jeremy a couple minutes later, I opened his door to say goodnight (his mother
says he did not want me to come say goodnight, but I did anyway). When I opened
the door he was lying in the dark, but he quickly sat up when I came in. He
confirmed he didn't want any stories and that he just wanted to lie with his
friends, whom he had positioned all about him. I said goodnight and left.
I seem to recall a couple of other times when he has, after one or two stories
or songs, admitted that he was too tired for more, but it's a rare occurrence
to say the least. Certainly this evening at dinner and afterward, his mother
and I both noted how tired he looked and he did concede to being tired and
coyly agreed that this was the reason he did not want stories. And, there's
probably nothing more to it than that. Still, it was a weird thing. Harry
can be so mysterious sometimes and out of the ordinary events like this send
me/us scurrying to analysis, particularly since he sat up so attentively when
I came in as if he were playing some private game with his friends or holding
a grudge about no stories on other nights.
Heck, he was probably just tired.
