January 24, 2004 - Saturday
With Jeremy sick with something yesterday, I started popping the zinc lozenges
to ward off any cold-like illness in myself. I'm a firm believer in the zinc
and I'm sure it has kept me from getting sick when the rest of the family
has been over the last couple of years. I swear it, particularly if I start
using them ahead of any real symptoms.

Of course, I'd like to not see the kids get sick either, so I've given Harry
zinc a few times, including today. I remember reading somewhere, perhaps on
an old package of Cold-Eeze (but not on the current ones) or perhaps in an
article that they are not recommended for children. However, it's not for
health reason. Instead, the zinc lozenges are really only effective when they
are dissolved in the mouth rather than swallowed and children can't be trusted
to suck on them and not chew them. However, while that would be the problem
with Jeremy, it is not with Harry. Harry is always doing with other types
of candies or tablets. "Sucking the juice out of it" he calls it
and it's something I can distinctly relate to, having done exactly the same
as a kid myself. When I was in grade school my friends used to tease me for
sucking Fritos, although really what I was doing was putting the salty side
on my tongue and sucking that for a moment. So, when I tell Harry that he
needs to "suck the juice" out of the zinc lozenge, I'm talking his
language. And, he's very good at it.
