April 11, 2005 - Monday
Yesterday morning for our weekly Sunday morning breakfast concert, before the shopping/Magnetix outing, I played a new CD of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. It was a big hit with both boys. They've shown interest in the Sunday morning music before, sometimes asking questions and we've often played at guessing the instruments, but the idea of the music describing the Pictures got their attention. I guess that's no surprise: imagination is what kids are all about. I read a little description before each movement telling what the music was depicting - the promenading, the gnome, the chickens, the children playing, the great gates of Kiev, etc. - and we talked a little about imagining each one. And, because we were also eating breakfast, the boys never got bored. Of course, Harry just loved the rousing drum and cymbal finish of the Great Gates of Kiev.
