Harry and I finished reading Harry Potter last night and I think by any measure it was a great success. He was captivated the whole way through and I think if we had started reading it just a little sooner, magic could have become the theme for his birthday party this Saturday instead of dinosaurs.
I few nights ago I asked whether he followed along with the words when I was reading. I thought it probably would have been hard, but I didn't really know. He said he sometimes tried to and I suppose that's what I might have expected. Yet this evening, when his mother went in to read to him for the first time in a while, she ended up not reading at all. Harry, she says, read about four pages from the last chapter himself and, naturally, that includes some pretty tricky words. It took him about 20-25 minutes to read those four pages, but I think his interest in reading some of it to mommy again like that is a pretty good measure of success right there.
