Yesterday afternoon Miss Maria quipped that Jeremy is the only child she's ever seen that goes around singing the Ode to Joy (from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony). He used to go around singing the Promenade from Pictures at an Exhibition, but now it's Beethoven and he sings it a lot. And it occurred to me that the Ode to Joy is a fairly easy melody that happens, I confirmed, to fit very nicely, that is it fingers nicely, on a cello. So I wrote it out for him and had him play it. At first I didn't tell him what it was and I actually thought he would start playing and recognize it by himself. But alas, Jeremy's fingers are still young and slow and his halting playing and questionable intonation didn't allow the door open quite far enough. So I took his cello and played the same notes for him a little more melodically. I'd not made it through the first line before he smiled. He played it for his mother when she got home yesterday evening and asked to play his cello again this morning before he went to school.
