The boys saw E.T. this morning for the first time and they both loved it. I'd told Harry a little bit about the story and some of the funny parts, and told him that there were some sad parts and some nervous parts, but really no scary parts. I thought that was important so he'd give the whole thing a chance. But they were both enrapt pretty much the whole way through. Jeremy was so cute when E.T. "died," intently watching and not turning away despite tears welling up a little in his eyes. Harry tried to make fun of Jeremy for "getting sad," but I think he was just covering for the little extra moisture in his own eyes. (At bedtime he said the same thing about Jeremy and denied that he was sad when I asked him about it. He was adamant, but I think he was just trying to be tough. Fair enough. He's growing into the roll of a boy.)
After the movie they both wanted to draw pictures and several included figures that looked like E.T. With mommy away until dinnertime, the boys and I also spent part of the afternoon carving their pumpkins for the second year in a row. And it was pretty good again this time, too. Jeremy's is on the left and Harry's is on the right. They both designed their own face and teeth, although I did most of the cutting. Harry wanted to try and I let him (a little), but it takes a lot of strength to push a knife through a pumpkin and eventually he just let me do it.
