After two lessons of giving his new cello teacher, Tim, very little to go on, Jeremy finally opened up today. And I don't really know what Jeremy thought, but I thought the lesson was great. Kate was great for Jeremy because she made the cello fun, but she rarely pushed him. Tim seems more interested in creating excitement through progress and was asking Jeremy to do things that I might have thought were really far beyond him, but now I see that they are a lot closer and possible. Very exciting.
It's hard to know why Jeremy opened up, of course. It may have just been that he was ready, or maybe to was the talk I had with him in the car after last week's lesson saying that Jeremy wasn't being very nice to Tim and that he should give him a chance.
There were also a couple of interesting things that Jeremy said at our "cello lesson" during Harry's drum lesson two days ago. One was simply saying, "that was pretty good," after he played a particularly full sounding note, as if to suggest he really is paying attention to this and learning. The second, in response to my positive re-enforcement, was to say, "I'm better now." It's true, there is progress being made here, and it's even nicer to think that Jeremy is feeling it.
